Child & Family Counseling Centers
CMHA provides individual, couples, family and group psychotherapy for those experiencing personal, emotional, interpersonal relationship, family and parenting, and substance abuse problems. The counseling program is staffed by licensed marriage and family therapists, social workers, and counselors, as well as board certified psychiatrists and APRN’s.

Office hours:

New Britain: 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday-Thursday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm Friday, and 8:00 am to 1:00 pm Saturday.
Torrington: Monday from 8:00 am-8:00 pm, Tuesday-Thursday 8:00 am-6:00 pm, and Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm.
Waterbury: Monday-Friday 9:00 am-6:00 pm.

Adult Outpatient Services

The CMHA Outpatient Program provides a complete array of behavioral health services, including assessment, psychotherapy and medication management for individuals, families and groups who are experiencing serious problems with mental illness and/or substance abuse. Services are provided to individuals aged 18 and over, and priority is given to individuals who are poor and have long term difficulties with addictions and mental illness.

CMHA utilizes evidence-based practices such as dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), motivational enhancement therapy, trauma sensitive programming, and cognitive behavioral therapies to assist clients in the process of recovery. Services are provided directly by CMHA, in collaboration with other CMHA programs, other behavioral health care providers, the immediate and surrounding communities, the consumer’s natural support systems, and with the consumer’s themselves.

Services are provided by Licensed and Master’s Prepared Clinicians in the disciplines of Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Counseling. Clinicians are trained in Addictions and Behavioral Health.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Co-Occurring Disorders

IOP provides behavioral health services to those individuals with serious mental illness and substance abuse. The program runs for 4 hours a day, minimum 3 days a week, and is offered to those individuals who would benefit from a structured treatment setting. The IOP focus is to reduce symptoms, improve overall functioning, prevent loss of independent or supportive living arrangements, prevent relapse and/or reduce substance use, and avoid hospitalization. Services are provided according to a treatment plan developed by the client with his or her clinician and psychiatrist. Psychiatric Services, medication management and coordination of care is available to all clients, along with step down services.

IOP utilizes evidenced based practices such as Motivational Enhancement Therapy, Trauma Sensitive programming, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapies. Services are provided directly by CMHA staff, in collaboration with other CMHA programs, other behavioral health care providers in the immediate and surrounding communities, the consumer’s natural support systems and with the consumers themselves.

Assertive Community Treatment Team (ACTT)

ACTT provides clinical and intensive case management services and outreach services to persons 18 years or older with behavioral health and concurrent substance abuse problems, and who need more support than traditional outpatient care and case management can provide. The program provides clinical, medical, life management and socialization services to help individuals acquire the skills necessary to successfully participate in community living while achieving optimal quality of life. The ACTT Team is available on site Monday through Friday 8:00 am—9:00 pm; and on Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 am—12:00 pm. Staff is also available on call.

Young Adult Assertive Community Treatment Team (YACTT)

The YAS/ACTT program is an extension of CMHA’s Adult Assertive Community Treatment Team. It provides intensive case management, medication management and supervision, and clinical services to young adults aged 18 to 25 residing in Central Connecticut. This program is able to serve up to 50 young adults with very serious mental health issues and/or serious substance abuse.

Jail Diversion Program

The Jail Diversion Program helps adults with psychiatric disabilities and less serious, non-violent criminal offenses to obtain access to community services. In doing so, clients are diverted from the corrections system and placed in more appropriate settings. In addition, the Jail Diversion program acts as a resource for the Department of Corrections in planning releases and discharges of inmates impacted by mental illness.

CMHA employs experienced clinicians and case managers to work in the Jail Diversion Program. Staff has offices at CMHA in New Britain, and is present in New Britain and Bristol courts every day. The Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) funds the Jail Diversion program.

Young Adult Services

CMHA’s Young Adult Services (YAS) provides quality, comprehensive, specialized services to young adults (age 18 – 25) recovering from severe mental illness and substance abuse/use. Clinical programs include a harm-reduction model for substance abuse/use, wellness & recovery plans, person centered planning, individual, group, and family counseling, and brief treatment interventions.

Behavioral Health Home Services (BHH)

BHH provides and coordinates integrated care (primary healthcare and behavioral health care) for eligible clients on Medicaid. The mission of BHH is to improve the quality of life through appropriate medical care, wellness education, tobacco cessation groups, and the integration of medical and psychological treatment. Services are provided through Medicaid and a grant from the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS).
