Mental Health Week activities

Communities find new and inspiring ways every year to express what National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day is all about. There are more than 1, 100 events every year in honor of Awareness Day.

Here is a sample of how communities came together in 2015. They recognized the importance of mental health and recovery for children, youth, and young adults, and built awareness around substance abuse prevention.

Arizona

In Tucson, the Sewa Uusim Community Partnership-Pascua Yaqui Tribe spent April and May running a campaign that included a collaboration committee of more than 13 programs supporting more than 20 events and trainings in recognition of child abuse prevention and children’s mental health awareness.

California

In Eureka, the Department of Health and Human Services Humboldt County System of Care arranged an Awareness Day proclamation, an event that included a meditative breathing workshop, and a showing of the documentary “Mad Dance Trilogy.”

Project ABC Los Angeles hosted a Little Builders Community Carnival for young children ages 0 to 5 years old, as well as their caregivers. Before the carnival, children and families came together in teams to build carnival games out of found and recycled materials. Once the games were completed, the carnival was opened to the community.

Colorado

The Colorado Office of Behavioral Health organized a youth summit in Denver for approximately 40 youth and 30 adult sponsors from system of care grantee counties. The event culminated in a “Stigma Jam, ” where youth presented their art.

Connecticut

The Connecticut Network of Care Transformation Initiative (CONNECT), located in Farmington, continued its Champion pledge drive and campaign as part of its Awareness Day celebration. In partnership with its statewide family advocacy organization, FAVOR, CONNECT reached 876 new individuals across all six regions of the state. CONNECT provided mental health-related information at community-based events, distributing more than 2, 000 CONNECT-branded items, including handouts, buttons, magnets, pens, and highlighters. The community also held a flash mob to raise awareness of mental health, and live-streamed the Knowledge Network for Systems of Care TV (KSOC-TV) national webisode in a community forum.
